Your Daily Prayer For Healing-08/05/2012

Dear Goddess, A tornado like storm just swept through Lancaster County. The day was feverishly hot. Pearlie stayed inside for most of the day. After the rain, we took a long slow walk around the property.

Earlier today, I thought of Bruce Weinstein and his Ethical Intelligence theory. The five principles of Ethical Intelligence are as follows:
1) do no harm
2) make things better
3) respect others
4) be fair
5) be loving

I met a woman at breakfast today who just moved to Lancaster from Penn State where she witnessed the extreme downfall of the Penn State football program and the fall from grace of Joe Paterno.  The town, State College, continues to be in a state of shock. The Governor of Pennsylvania is implicated in the sexual abuse scandal coverup. Are the Penn State alumni rising up to demand an inquiry into the Governor’s role in the cover-up?

This remains to be seen.

What can we learn from the fall of Joe Paterno, Jerry Sandusky and the Penn State football program?

Firstly, the aura surrounding the scandal is still embroiled in shame, guilt and blame. A perceptual change is in dire need of immediate implementation.

Joe Paterno’s fall can happen to anyone, because power, prestige and reputation are impermanent.

The love of sports that permeates American society became too big to challenge at Penn State, too big to fail, but it did fail precisely because of this attitude.

Academic excellence was replaced by hero worship and the need to win at any cost.

In the interim, a $176 million project is in motion to renovate and construct other sports facilities at Penn State University Park.

I don’t think replacing one sport for another is necessarily the answer for Penn State’s ability to rise again.

What do you think?

Om Peace Amen

I agree that trying to replace football with another sport is not the answer. I am astounded more questions have not been asked of the governor. I don’t believe taking away the wins of the last 12 years of the football team is any any way fair. The students who won those victories were in no way responsible for the crimes committed by Sandusky.
