Dear Goddess, Tuesday, June 4, on my radio show, I interviewed Linda Graham MFT. Linda is a therapist, a Buddhist, and a brain scientist.
I read her book very carefully, called Bouncing Back. Why are we bouncing back from? From trauma, pain, suffering, lack of love and much more.
I was drawn to what Linda had to say about compassion, and most importantly self compassion. Self-esteem and self compassion are not the same thing at all. Self-esteem is rooted in competition, achievement and is based on whether the outside world approves of you or not. If you “fail,” your self-esteem plummets. If you “succeed,” your self-esteem is intact.
Self compassion on the other hand, is based on a genuine love of self, no matter what.
We can do self compassion check in’s several times a day. Simply put your right hand on your heart and breathe consciously and attentively. At the same time, place your left hand on your lower abdomen and as you breathe, be mindful of the in breath and the out breath.
The warm touch of your hand releases the hormone, oxytocin, producing a feeling of attachment, safety and peace.
Self compassion check in’s may be the most important thing we do for ourselves every day.
Wisdom teaches me I am nothing. Love teaches me I am everything.
Between the two, my life flows. – Sri Nisargadatta
