Your Daily Prayer For Healing-11/29/2010-Your Prayer For Today

Dear God/ess, Old Baxter, friend of Mukunda, who just turned 13 last week, slipped his tether up on the hill and ran for freedom to the river.

Tom woke me up to tell me to bring a lead for Ulysses, who was the one who found Baxter stuck in the mud in the cold water. Then Ulysses picked a fight with him. From Hero to Buffoon in the space of five minute’s time.

I took muddy Uly into the house, prepared some Miracle Drops for Baxter, and went to help Tom hoist the dog up the river embankment to safety.

To the God/ess of Ulysses and Baxter and all the dogs of this world, hear this: we humans are willing to crawl around in the mud to save your lives. And even though Ulysses wanted to pick a fight with you, dear Baxter, in reality he’s the one who saved your life.

Earlier, Tom and G were going to go swimming at the Y, but G called at the last minute and canceled. Did G save your life, dear Baxter?

In reality, a whole orchestration of helpers synchronized to save your precious life.

When Mukunda was in his prime, he’d go visit Baxter on the hill sometimes three times a day. Once in a while, Muki ate Baxter’s food,  but mostly he went for the comradery. Then when Ulysses joined our family, Muki and Uly went up to visit Baxter together.

One Easter, Ulysses stole an Easter Bunny toy from Baxter. Six weeks later, Baxter broke his tether and came down to our house looking for his toy. When I saw him running up the lane with bunny in mouth, looking over his shoulder to see if Ulysses was following, I immediately called his mistress.

I said, “Your dog is brilliant! He remembered where his toy bunny was for weeks and when he got away, came down to our house looking for it.

“Never underestimate the memory of a dog for his toy.”

Om Peace Amen

We may never understand how Divine Intelligence works, yet when we come to realize that nothing else can be trusted, we find real freedom and peace of mind.

Welcome To 2010

Welcome to the promise of 2010, a new year, a new decade. The feelings of potential are wonderful to relax into and to cherish.

I know that life challenges will arise, and have solutions as to how to deal with these.

1) Arise early in the day to write my Daily Prayer For Healing

I write prayers in order to open myself at all times to the Divine. Maybe I am one who needs constant reminding. But writing prayers is an exercise in discipline and creativity. It is an excellent writing practice.

Already this year, 1/6/2010, I lost my beloved dog, Mukunda. Writing daily prayers has eased my sorrow, and helped me to face the grief head on.

2) Walk every day with my dog

I now have one dog whose name is Ulysses, who is pictured here. . We go on many walks, we play ball, and Ulysses loves to play “stick,” as well. Ulysses, by the way, took the passing of Mukunda very well, because Muki died in my arms with Ule observing. Say what you will, but animals take death in stride. They seem to innately know that death does not exist, and nothing ever dies.

3) Play my violin at least three times a week

I have been doing well so far with this on. We found a wonderful drummer who plays with us, and we are planning to do a gig for Saint Patrick’s day!

4) Communicate with like-minded people

This is an easy one. Onine and offline, I have friends who I may or may not see eye to eye on all things, nevertheless, we love each other.

5) Commit to loving thoughts continuously

This is my favorite Intention of all. Every moment of every day, we have a choice in what we think and how we think. We can choose love or we can choose fear. I believe a meditation practice is powerfully helpful in automatically choosing love over fear.

6) Allow all the good in the Universe to be my constant companion

This one is easy as long as I have a dog in my life. All the good in the Universe is contained in all the dogs I have ever had. Since dogs are the greatest companions known to hu-mans, then Love is the natural outcome of these wonderful friendships.

What happens if I don’t have a dog?

I’ll have to go out into the world  and find one!

7) See the good in all the people, all the time

I am getting better and better at this one. Yes humans can do some pretty stupid things that end up being amazingly unloving. These things are done out of ignorance.

Forgiveness is the only answer.

8) See the good in every situation

Let us say I have a particularly challenging situation arise. I have a choice, whether to emphasize the drama of the story, how “awful” it was or is; or I can choose to see all of the blessings  from everything that happened.

I choose the latter!

9) Seek balance in solitude and the company of people

It’s all too possible to be alone too much, or be with people far too much. Seeking balance in these and all things is my wish for the New Year.

10) Cherish the time that I have here on Planet Earth

Every moment is precious. Love it. Live it. Experience it. Do not run away from it.

Om, Peace Amen.

Single Payer Healthcare Reform In Pennsylvania

We rallied for Single Payer Healthcare reform at the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg PA on October 20, 2009. (Pictured here is the Rotunda, as seen looking straight up from the inside of that historic building!

Pennsylvania may well be the first State to enact Single Payer in America. The commonwealth wil save 2 plus billion dollars the first year it is put into place.

I am a nurse. The lack of healthcare access and the suffering this creates is one of the number one reasons for burnout in my profession.

Thanks to all the good people who came out and spoke for such a worthy cause, and thanks to the 1,500 people who showed up to show their support.

Yes WE Can!!

The Pedometer Barometer

Published by under health,pedometers

Old Style Pedometer

Old Style Pedometer

I love my pedometer!

America On The Move has come to the hospital where I work, and all my friends
as well as myself are getting free tiny pedometers that attach to our waist bands
and measures every step we take.

Over the years, I’ve entered similar programs. One pedometer fell off in my pasture
land, only to show up a year later, rusted and disabled.

I remember getting another pedometer that measured ten steps for  every one.

After that I just let go of the idea of ever having one again.

This pedometer is perfect! It does the job it was designed to do which is to count my
steps, one stride at a time.

Since my choice and goal is to walk the Pacific Crest Trail, which surprisingly is only 10,000
steps a day from 11/16 to 12/28, I need to hustle to get those steps in, nevertheless.

10,000 steps measures five miles.

My dogs and I walk 2-4 miles a day. I often take 7,000 steps at work, and lately at home,
as well.

If I have to go to the other end of the hospital or my home to complete a task, I do so
happily now, knowing that my steps are getting me closer to my goal.

What is my goal?

Besides completing the Pacific Trail hike, getting my free pedometer, and rumors have it,
getting a $30.00 bonus, I like the idea of moving my body actively, getting up and moving,
stepping and dancing my way through the day.

So do all my friends who have a pedometer. This is where the fun begins.

I was talking to a fellow pedometer owner last night, and we spontaneously broke into steps,
dancing to a tune that was transmitted through the hospital sound system.

Another of my fellow pedometer owners is a stalwart Republican. I admittedly represent the
other side of the spectrum, politically speaking.

It would seem that I have nothing in common with this woman, and the 2008 election certainly
accentuated our opposing viewpoints.

Then we both became obsessed with our pedometers. We chose the same trail. When she
told me she slept with her pedometer, so that when she gets up in the middle of the night to
go to the bathroom and those steps are measured, too, I loved the zaniness of that confession!

So now we have something we can talk about without feeling the need to wring each others neck!

The pedometer creates common ground between people who ordinarily would have nothing
to do with each other!

It all began when I took my dogs to the Vet and asked the receptionist if my dog Ulysses was over
weight.

She instructed me to look straight down upon his standing body and if I saw obvious bulges,
then I would have to take him on more walks.

So I looked down at him, and saw a protruding bulge on both sides of his body. I knew then that I would
be taking Ule and my other dog Mukunda on daily disciplined walks.

About one week into our new routine, a four mile walk along the Mill Stream in what is called the
(Lancaster) County Park, I heard about the pedometer and thought that recording steps would
add a little excitement to what I had vowed to do for my dogs, and also for myself.

Five days of walking melted those bulges off both dogs.

My bulges vanish ever so slightly every day.

I notice we all sleep better; Mukunda in particular loves his food more than he ever did
(if that is possible)!!

I take deeper and more conscious breaths.

Ulysses snores more contentedly when he sleeps.

Muki used to jump in and out of the bed all night long but now he stays in one place for
hours, as we all snuggle together on these wonderful long winter’s nights, as the days
grow shorter and the nights grow longer.

And we vow to reject a sedentary life this year, one day at a time.

The pedometer serves as a motivation tool to keep moving throughout the day and night.
The America On The Move web site allows me to log the number of steps I take every day,
then shows where I am along the Pacific Crest Trail. Right now, I’m hanging out at Death Valley.
Soon I will arrive at Crater Lake. By December 28th, I should have completed the hike.

The trail map is a fun way for my imagination to play, but the exercise and activity that my
pedometer inspires is creating a daily walking and running habit, connecting me to people
and giving all of us a lifestyle we want to maintain.

Research shows that pedometer accuracy can vary widely, depending on the make and
model.

I am happy to report that the America On The Move pedometer ranks #2 as one of the best
pedometers on the market.

I can hardly wait to tell all my friends!!
